Valley Care Foundation launches major grant initiative to support older adults in Sewickley area
New charitable foundation transitions from historic health care roots to fund local nonprofits
June 2026, Sewickley PA — A long-time advocate for Sewickley’s older adults is entering a new chapter.
The Valley Care Foundation, a non-operating private foundation, has officially launched its mission as a grant-making organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of seniors in the greater Sewickley Valley area.
Building on a 45-year legacy of care, the Foundation seeks to partner with nonprofit organizations that help older adults live safely and independently.
“Most people over age 65 strongly prefer to stay in their homes and their communities, but they may need help to do so,” said Richard Hogan, MD, president of the Valley Care Foundation. “We aim to financially support nonprofit organizations offering programs that can keep them living well into their 90’s and beyond.”
Funding Priorities
Valley Care Foundation gives preference to programs that serve adults age 65 and older in these critical areas:
- Health and wellness — Chronic disease management, Alzheimer’s and dementia care
- Daily essentials — Transportation, food security and nutritional needs
- Social connection — Reducing isolation and improving safety
- Support systems — Caregiver respite, education and resource connections
“Many older adults will benefit from services to maintain their physical and mental health. This might involve transportation, social activities or check-ins from community volunteers,” Dr. Hogan said. “That’s why we are seeking programs that support age-friendly neighborhoods, community involvement and innovative thinking.”
Grant Distribution
Valley Care Foundation’s board of trustees draws upon their experience in community service to further its mission. Each year they will award grants between $15,000 and $50,000. Eligibility requirements can be found at ValleyCareFoundation.org or by contacting info@ValleyCareFoundation.org.
A Legacy of Community Care
The Foundation’s roots date back to 1978, when a grassroots community effort formed the Valley Care Association (VCA) to establish Sewickley’s first nursing home. After decades of operating adult day care and residential services, the organization evolved and sold the nursing home to the Masons in 1999. The Masons later expanded it into a retirement community, known as Masonic Village.
Using funds from that sale, VCA created the Valley Care Endowment (VCE), to support community groups and carry out its long-standing vision.
Identifying Greatest Needs
In 2020, VCE commissioned Holleran Consulting to analyze the current state of aging at home in the region and guide VCE to a new strategy. The resulting Senior Community Profile was based on findings from 60 key health and human services professionals in Allegheny and Beaver counties.
“When the Holleran Report was completed, it was clear there were many areas of need, including a navigation tool. We created Senior Central to connect individuals with resources for the challenges they are facing,” said Dr. Hogan. “The Sewickley YMCA has been a wonderful partner in that project, providing in-person and online help for people in need. We have also given financial support to their Faith In Action and Thrive Center services.”
VCE also awarded a grant to Federated Guardians, which manages complex guardianship arrangements for vulnerable populations. In 2025, VCE and VCA merged to become Valley Care Foundation, refocusing its resources toward strategic community reinvestment.
“In the Sewickley area, there is a significant aging population that can benefit from attention to their issues,” Dr. Hogan said. “Through our financial support, they will receive innovative services to help them remain healthy, safe, and connected with others.”
